IoT-based VFD monitoring solution for hospitality facilities, enabling real-time visibility, fault alerts, performance analysis, and proactive maintenance of HVAC, pumps, and utility drives without disrupting operations.
The Challenge
In the hospitality segment, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are widely used to control critical systems such as HVAC, chilled water pumps, ventilation fans, and water supply systems. For this facility, multiple VFDs were operating across different areas, but there was no centralized mechanism to monitor their performance in real time. Operational data such as running status, frequency, current, voltage, power, and fault conditions was available only locally at each VFD panel. This made it difficult for the maintenance team to identify issues early, correlate performance across systems, or respond quickly to faults. Any abnormal condition or trip was often noticed only after it affected guest comfort or facility operations. Additionally, the lack of centralized visibility resulted in: Limited real-time insight into VFD health and operating conditions No immediate alerts for faults or abnormal parameters Manual data collection for analysis and reporting Difficulty in optimizing VFD operation for energy efficiency and equipment life The client required a reliable solution to remotely monitor VFD performance in real time and support proactive maintenance without disrupting ongoing hospitality operations.
Our Solution
Volkkommen Industries implemented an IoT-based VFD Monitoring solution using the SEDAC Modbus to MQTT Gateway to integrate multiple VFDs into a centralized monitoring platform. The SEDAC device was connected to the VFDs through RS485 / Modbus communication, enabling continuous data acquisition from each drive. Key operational parameters such as run status, output frequency, current, voltage, power, energy consumption, and fault status were captured in real time. All collected data was transmitted securely to a cloud-based platform, where a customized monitoring dashboard was developed to meet the operational needs of the hospitality facility. The platform enabled: Real-time monitoring of VFD operating parameters Clear visualization of multiple VFDs from a single interface Instant alerts for faults, trips, or abnormal operating conditions Historical data analysis to study trends and performance patterns Downloadable reports in Excel and PDF formats for maintenance review and audits The solution was designed to be scalable, allowing additional VFDs or equipment to be integrated in the future without changes to the core system.
